Sustainable wooden facade cladding

For wooden facade cladding, there are numerous suitable wood species to choose from. When making the right choice, several factors are important, such as durability, stability, appearance, and fire classification. The durability of a wood species is indicated by a durability class, ranging from class I to V, where V is the least durable class. Examples of wood species with durability class I are Accoya® and Padoek, while Abachi is less suitable due to its durability class V and therefore requires treatment.

Stability and good ventilation are also essential when choosing a type of wood for your wooden cladding. Although any type of wood works, wood types with a low swelling and shrinkage coefficient are more suitable. It is important to take this into account during installation. Frequently asked questions about wooden cladding

Which type of wood is most suitable for my facade?

The choice depends on the desired appearance and maintenance requirements. At Boogaerdt Hout, we distinguish between three categories:

Naturally sustainable: Wood types such as Jatoba and Padouk have high natural durability and age beautifully.
Modified wood: Think about Accoya® or Thermo Radiata Pine. This wood has become extremely stable and rot-resistant through treatment (thermal or chemical).
Softwood (treated): For a budget-friendly or colorful option, often applied with a paint system.

Is ventilation behind the wooden cladding really necessary?

Yes, this is crucial. Wood is a natural product that needs to be able to 'breathe'.

The rule: Always ensure an air gap of at least 20 mm behind the boards.
Why? Good ventilation prevents moisture from accumulating behind the cladding. Without ventilation, the wood can expand, warp, or even rot from the inside out. Also ensure there are ventilation openings at the bottom and top (optionally with insect netting).

Should I treat wooden cladding or let it weather and turn grey?

That is an aesthetic choice:

Aging: If you leave the wood untreated, it will turn silver-grey under the influence of UV radiation. The durability of the wood is not affected by this (with the right species).
To deal with: Do you want to retain the original color or apply a specific color? Then we recommend a semi-transparent stain or an opaque paint system. Please note that this requires periodic maintenance.

Can wooden cladding also be mounted vertically?

Absolutely! Vertical cladding is currently very popular and gives a modern, elongating effect to a building.

Important: For vertical mounting, the backing wood (the battens) must be installed double or crosswise so that the ventilation flow is from bottom to top. not is blocked.

What about the fire safety of wooden facades?

Wood is naturally flammable, but in many cases meets the requirements of the Building Decree. Depending on the requirements, we can the wood fire-retardant treatment up to Euroclass B or D with, for example, Woodsafe or Flamefix outdoor. Ask our team about the specific requirements for your project.

Which fasteners should I use?

Use for wooden cladding always stainless steel Fasteners (preferably quality A2 or A4).

NB: Many types of wood contain tannins. When you use standard galvanized screws, they react with the wood, causing black, unsightly stains that are impossible to remove.
