Sustainable woodwork on the parking deck of the Kop Keersluis project

At the new construction project Head Lock in Vlissingen (54 apartments on the corner of Paul Krugerstraat and Willem Ruysstraat) the above-ground deck structure of the parking garage plays a central role. The parking deck forms the transition between the residences and the enclosed courtyard. To give this space a high-quality, warm, and extremely sustainable appearance, a deck finish with solid Azobé wooden decking.

Why Azobé for the wooden “ship’s deck” of Kop Keersluis?

What makes this project particularly special is the layout centered around a wooden 'ship's deck'. This deck is clad in greenery, causing the underlying parking lot to partially disappear from view and creating a pleasant, natural interior for residents. In combination with the striking architecture, Kop Keersluis becomes a recognizable landmark at the entrance to the Scheldekwartier and the city of Vlissingen. Strict technical and aesthetic requirements apply to an outdoor deck on an inner courtyard. Azobé (D70 / Durability Class 1) is the ideal wood species for this application thanks to a number of specific properties:

Maximum sustainability: Azobé is known as one of the strongest and most wear-resistant hardwoods in the world. It is extremely resistant to moisture, varying weather conditions, and mechanical stress, which is essential for a heavily used deck in the Zeeland coastal climate.

Stable and robust planks: The decking boards are resistant to heavy impact and load. Even with prolonged exposure to rain, a salty marine environment, and sunlight, Azobé retains its properties.

Natural appearance & graying: Over time, the Azobé wood develops a characteristic, silver-grey patina. This blends beautifully with the applied dune landscape and the two artisan brick types of the apartment complex.
