Film-forming or not
To choose between film-forming and non-film-forming products, you first need to know the difference. In short, film-forming products create a film. By applying a film, the product remains on the surface as an extra layer. If it does not form a film, it is absorbed by the wood and thus protects the wood from the inside.
Film-forming paint
Film-forming products are products that form a new layer on the wood and therefore protect the wood against external influences. This applies to paints and varnishes. These products are ideal for protection. The big advantage is that these products also offer an extra layer of UV protection. This makes it more resistant to scorching sunlight. The protection is generally stronger than that of non-film-forming products. These products are especially suitable for harder types of wood. Varnish and paint are more susceptible to cracking on soft wood. If it is necessary to apply a new layer of paint over time, the old layer of paint must be sanded first. This will cause a slight color change over time.
Non-film forming
Because the product does not form a film, it penetrates deep into the wood and protects your wood from the inside. Non-film-forming products are (most types) dyes and horticultural oils. These products are very easy to apply. The big advantage of non-film-forming products is that in many cases they improve the appearance of the wood. The wood grain remains clearly visible and the wood does not lose its character. There are clear and colored variations. The protection of these products is slightly less than that of film-forming products. For example, it protects to a lesser extent against UV radiation. In most cases, stains are stronger than oils.
